Daylight Saving Causes Week of Weird

Are you ready to spring forward?!  It seems it was yesterday, that I was Christmas shopping and finding new places for Flash, our Elf on the Shelf, to wreak havoc each morning of December.  Now, my husband and I are discussing vegetable starts, Spring Break and plans for summer projects.  There is light at the end of the dreary tunnel, friends.  Soon, the sun will be here to stay.

Rough week ahead

Daylight saving time happens this Sunday, March, 10th at 2am.  According to The Better Sleep Council, 61% of U.S. adults say that they feel the effects of daylight saving the following Monday after setting their clocks.  Eleven percent of these adults say that it takes more than a week to adjust to the time change, while another 29% say it takes a full week.

Did you know that 74% of adults who are not getting adequate sleep say it effects their productivity at work?  Thirty-nine percent of U.S. adults say that daylight saving time effects their mood.  Car accidents, falling asleep on the job or in meetings, and admitting to be less than pleasant to be around, are just a small handful of sufferings that have been reported in relation to daylight saving time.

Things could get weird

According to surveyed adults, daylight saving time and lack of sleep has been the root to odd behavior, including:
  • Drove to the wrong location
  • Wore slippers outside
  • Told off-color jokes
  • Put paycheck in the garbage
  • Went to work on day off
The good news is that this week of weird is worth it.  Daylight saving is all about saving energy consumption.  "It’s a relatively simple idea: If we set our clocks an hour ahead, we can make the most of the longer periods of daylight during summer, gaining an extra hour of sunlight in the evening when we can spend time outside of the house and avoid using home lighting and appliances. If we don’t move the clocks forward, we waste that additional hour of sunlight in the morning, which may occur before many of us have even gotten out of bed" (Earth911).

Be ahead of the change

Begin making the adjustment to the time change, now.  Start going to bed fifteen minutes earlier and waking fifteen minutes earlier.  This will help with the "lost" hour and make adapting to the time change easier.  For you, worried daylight-savers, The Better Sleep Council has a list of tips to help you continue to function at your best.

Tell me, have you made any memorable moments due to lack of sleep?

Write condolences for Newtown

As the Newtown tragedy rests heavy on our hearts this Christmas season,
the U.S. Postal Service has set up a special address for individuals to send condolences to those affected by the tragedy.

“We understand that there is an outpouring of support for everyone in the Newtown area, and we hope to make it easier for those who wish to send encouragement and messages of compassion to those affected,” said Kimberly J. Peters, Connecticut Valley District Manager for the U.S. Postal Service. “Through letters and cards, families will be able to hold that friendship in their hands and to read those kind words at a time and place that supports their pace of healing.”

Letters of thoughts and comfort should be addressed to:

Don't Get Burned: Protect Yourself With Safe Sunscreen

By Cassie McCully

How was your fourth of July weekend?  For those of us in Vancouver, Washington and the surrounding areas, it was hot and sunny, which made for an excellent holiday weekend.

While the sun was blazing, some of us were so busy with the festivities and enjoying the heat, that the sunscreen was applied too late, or worse, not at all.  There's nothing like some good sun-striping to help make sunscreen a priority the next time you're basking in the sun.

This year, the Environmental Working Group (EWG), is recommending 1 in 4 sunscreens compared to 1 in 5 last year and 1 in 12 the year before.  You can read on the U.S. Sunscreens 2012 highlights in their annual review, and learn what makes sunscreen safe and effective.  You can also look up your specific sunscreen and read its overall score, information on ingredients, effectiveness and safety.  You can also view the list of best sunscreens.

Personally, it's time to rid of the sunscreen I've been using and make a healthier choice.

Keep safe in the sun this week!

Dye Your Easter Eggs Naturally

By Cassie McCully

Easter wouldn't be half the fun if it weren't for dyed eggs, right?  Have you dyed yours, yet?  If not, consider dying them naturally with the items you have on-hand.

After some research {cue pinterest-- a craft-lovers haven}, naturally dyed eggs didn't seem like much work.  Thanks to Better Homes and Gardens' list of all-natural dye recipes, the way to attain natural dye from household ingredients was simple.
First, the kids and I gathered ingredients.
We boiled red onion peels and skins
and spinach in separate pans to our desired shades of dye.
We found a reason to use up the last of our bitter cranberry juice,
 and steeped some gingersnap tea.
To complete your dye, add the recommended amount of vinegar to each bowl.
Then the kids dunked the eggs and let them sit, turning every so often, for 30+ minutes.
Note:  Natural doesn't necessarily mean a quick process.

There you have it--naturally dyed eggs.
As you can see, our cranberry juice didn't quite want to stay put,
and eventually the color changed to a dark grayish blue.
Note:  I tried my hand at my own dyes.  Perhaps you'll heed all of BHG's advice and have more colorful eggs in greens, blues, pinks and reds.  Regardless, I am loving the natural pallet of these naturally dyed eggs.
Have a great Easter weekend!

Portland Named Top Green City in the US

For those of us living in Southwest, Washington, the fact that Portland, Oregon is a hop, skip and a jump away, is a serious perk.  This month, Portland is being recognized nationally, as Travel + Leisure magazine has named Portland, Oregon as the Greenest City in America.

Did you know that Portland is a quarter covered by trees, or that there are 288 parks in the city?  The mass transit system, as well as the cycling culture are a couple other reasons why Portland ranks number one on the list.

Suddenly, the rain doesn't seem so bad, right?

Some of My Favorite Things...

For my very first blog on this site I will share some of my favorite things:

Enjoying the view looking down on Beacon Rock from Hamilton Mountain at 9am on a misty day feeling the gentle breeze on my face. Awe inspiring!

Whispering "Daddy loves you" in the ear of each of my four still-sleeping kids before I head off to the office (Note: my 15 year old son has asked that I not do this since he's a light sleeper and it wakes him up...so I now whisper it outside his door).

Reading a great adventure story.

Getting a chiropractic adjustment by my chiropractor and feeling taller!

Hearing my beautiful wife laugh and going on walks with her.

The way my body feels after a good run.

Random detours driving down a road I have never been down.

The harmony of a brilliant song.

Hearing my grandpa tell a story about his life.
My Son, Caleb, standing on Hamilton Mountain
overlooking the Columbia River Gorge and Beacon Rock

What are some of your favorite things?
-Dr. Marc
