Do you suffer from regular headaches, insomnia, anxiety? It could be a magnesium deficiency

Being a chiropractor, it's no surprise that many of my patients come into the office with complaints of  headaches and pain in general.  After routine check-ups, x-rays and appropriate chiropractic adjustments, I like to ask my patients about sleep, stress and regularly feeling tense, as well.  If they respond that any of these symptoms has taken a hold on their life, I refer to them one of my most favorite products, Natural Calm.

Natural Calm, is a magnesium nitrate supplement that helps combat a long list of symptoms: anxiety, muscle tension or pain, feeling unable to relax, high blood pressure or insomnia could be a sign of magnesium deficiency.  To read more about magnesium deficiencies and the twenty-two conditions that can be triggered by a magnesium deficiency, check out the article, "The Miracle of Magnesium."

Natural Calm is available for purchase in our office, and has a list price cheaper than at the local health food store.  The flavors of Natural Calm we carry are raspberry lemon, lemon, orange, cherry and no flavor.

Prices:
8 oz. $21.95 + tax (often lasts 2-3 months)
16 oz. $38.95  + tax (often lasts 4-6 months)

U.S. health care system: managing disease or managing health?

As a doctor, nothing has brought more concern and frustration than the current state of our health system.  The system is unhinged, broken and quite frankly--ineffective.

Recently, Andrew Weil, MD, author of "You Can't Afford to Get Sick: Your Guide to Optimum Health and Health Care," wrote an article for CNN calling the U.S. health system, one that "manages disease, not health."  This article rings a similar tone to the post that I recently shared concerning the failed flu vaccine, and the industry being corrupted by the prospect of money before health.

The excellent point that Weil makes in his article, is that educating citizens on how to take a proactive approach to their health is significantly lacking.  Instead of encouraging citizens to embrace a clean diet, an active lifestyle and natural/therapeutic tools to manage stress and ailments, the system implements expensive drugs and surgeries once the conditions manifest themselves.

According to the article,
"The U.S. "currently ranks lowest on a variety of health measures," concludes a new report from an expert panel commissioned by the National Institutes of Health. Specifically, Americans have more obesity, more sexually transmitted diseases, shorter life expectancies and higher infant mortality than the inhabitants of nearly all of the 16 developed "peer" countries studied."
Yet, the U.S. spends more on health care than any other country, and there are still 30 million people unable to access it.  The numbers do not add up.  There is nothing healthy about this system of health care.

This Saturday, March 16th, CNN will re-air the compelling documentary, "Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare."  Please consider watching this film.  We must understand what is happening within our health care system before we can become advocates for change.  And change, is what we desperately need.

Obamacare as it currently seems to stand is NOT the solution.  We need an effective health care program to promote healthy living, teach proactive measures to sustain health, and a program that will encourage natural remedies first, and not costly and often dangerous measures to mask ailments.
Your turn: What improvements would you suggest are needed in order to help Americans truly become more healthy and decrease cost? I REALLY want to hear from you!

Dr. Marc

CDC Calls the Flu Vaccine a Failure

In a new study out Thursday from the Centers for Disease Control, the vaccine proved effective just over half of the time. And among seniors who are 65 years old and older, one of the most vulnerable populations, the vaccine only offered nine percent protection (NBCNews.com).

I, for one, do not get the flu shot and likely never will.   Since receiving the flu shot is a personal choice, I urge everyone to become well informed about the flu shot.

As a chiropractor, I have nurses who are patients who are required to get the flu shot.  One nurse reported that they often all get vaccinated the same day—and that soon thereafter they are short staffed because so many of the nurses who had received the shot, have to call in sick. That goes counter to what I believe is health!

I also see it as a money maker for vaccination companies.  Why else would local grocery stores be displaying large banners stating they offer the flu shot?!  I prefer chiropractic which strengthens the body’s immune response—without injections.

Natural Solutions for Seasonal Affective Disorder

Do the winter months get you down?  If so, there may be a good reason for your change in mood.  Many individuals are faced with seasonal affective disorder (SAD) during the fall and winter months, while the days are shorter and turn dark earlier.

Dr. Davis wants patients to know that SAD is a common condition that can often be managed by a combination of natural therapies and lifestyle modifications.  Read Dr. Davis' suggestions on how to maintain emotional well-being all winter long.

Symptoms of SAD

Like other forms of depression, SAD leads to trouble sleeping, anxiety, social withdrawal, feelings of helplessness, lack of energy, appetite changes, and difficulty concentrating.

Finding Balance in Mind, Body and Spirit

One of the guiding principals of chiropractic is that the mind, body and spirit are connected and influence each other.  Although Dr. Davis doesn't treat psychological problems, patients who receive chiropractor care often report that chiropractic care helps alleviate not only physical ailments but mental and emotional problems as well.

5 Natural Solutions for SAD

Light Therapy:  Because SAD is triggered by shorter hours of daylight during the fall and winter, many individuals find relief from light therapy.  Light therapy is easy to use, lacks side affects and has proven to be efficient for many people who deal with SAD.

Regular Exercise:  Regular exercise is an excellent way to ward off stress and anxiety, as well as to maintain optimal physical health.  In fact, research indicates that seasonal depression responds to exercise as well as it does light therapy.

Increase Vitamin D:  Research has shown that vitamin D, a nutrient necessary for absorption of calcium and phosphorous, may counteract SAD.  The body synthesizes vitamin D through sunlight exposure, though during the winter months, the lack of sunlight can cause a vitamin D deficiency.  The best natural sources for vitamin D is through foods such as: fatty fish such as herring, salmon, catfish, sardines, tuna and eel.  Cod liver oil is a great, potent source, while smaller amounts of vitamin D are found in eggs and liver.  Supplements are available in your health food store as well.

Melatonin:  Melatonin is a hormone produces in the brain in response to the light and darkness cycles of the day and night.  It also helps regulate sleep cycles, which are often negatively affected for those dealing with SAD.  Melatonin supplements may be an effective treatment for SAD, especially when used with light therapy.  Check with your doctor to see if this is a good option for you.

Spice Things Up With Turmeric: Turmeric, a spice used in many curry dishes, has been widely used in both traditional Chinese and Indian Ayurvedic medicine to treat a vast array of conditions.  Turmeric is derived from curcumin which is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.  Research has shown that curcumin may be used as a natural anti-depressant when used in conjunction with piperine, a component of black pepper.  Turmeric and curcumin are also available in supplement form.

Listen to your mind and body this winter to see if any of these solutions may be beneficial to you.  The winter months don't have to be long and dark.

Juicing for better health

 By Cassie McCully

Though the weather resembles nothing near the sweet days of summer, you can enjoy sunshine in a glass any day of the year.

If you don't already juice, here's a few reasons why you might consider doing so:

1)  Fresh juice provides vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, proteins, immunity building and more
2)  Regular juicers rave about an increase in energy, clearer skin, and a clearer mind
3)  It's an easy way to consume your USDA recommended 2-4 servings of fruit and vegetables each day

Interested in adding juicing to your diet?  Here's a great 30 days of juicing list, and a green detox recipe that will be perfect for after the holidays and to start the New Year off right.

Once warmer days do roll around, I'm definitely going to pay a visit to Portland's very own juice cart, "Sip," who made it onto Food & Wine's list of best juice bars.  They're now closed for the winter, but their steamed "Flu Slayer": apple, lemon, ginger and garlic would have been a great pick for the entire family during these last couple of weeks.

Do you juice?  What has been your experience?

Antibacterial Soap and Sanitizer: Safe or Risky?

At the close of my most recent post, 'Chiropractic Immunity Adjustments and 5 Other Tips For a Strong Immune System', I referred to couple of questions that I am often asked, in relation to immunity.  One of these questions is,
"What about antibacterial soaps, and should I wipe down surfaces with antibacterial wipes?"
The study of antibacterial soaps and sanitizers have been widely scrutinized in the last decade.  The findings on the effectiveness of these products may surprise you.

FDA Warnings

On April 8, 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration acknowledged two key points relating to the use of antibacterial products and the long-term health effects.  Here is what they stated:

1)  The antibacterial chemical triclosan, is no more effective than regular soap and water at preventing infections.
2) There is concern over triclosan's potential long-term health effects due to the development of antibiotic resistance from product use over time.

Research

A 2004 research group from Columbia University and New York University found in their study, that the effects of antibacterial products did not reduce the risk of viral infectious diseases within a household of healthy individuals.  A review given by the Oxford Journal: Clinical of Infectious Diseases, concluded these same results after reviewing data from twenty-seven studies dated from 1980-2006:
"Soaps containing triclosan within the range of concentrations commonly used in the community setting (0.1%–0.45% wt/vol) were no more effective than plain soap at preventing infectious illness symptoms and reducing bacterial levels on the hands."
As for the second point mentioned by the FDA, that there is a concern for the potential long-term health effects related to antibacterial product use and a development of antibiotic resistance due to such use, the Oxford Journal referred to this concern in their review, as well.
"Several laboratory studies demonstrated evidence of triclosan-adapted cross-resistance to antibiotics among different species of bacteria."
The Oxford Journal concluded their findings with:
"The lack of an additional health benefit associated with the use of triclosan-containing consumer soaps over regular soap, coupled with laboratory data demonstrating a potential risk of selecting for drug resistance, warrants further evaluation by governmental regulators regarding antibacterial product claims and advertising. Further studies of this issue are encouraged."
Hand Sanitizer and Children
Lastly, I feel it important to mention that in extreme cases, anti-bacterial sanitizers can be extremely harmful to children.  There have been documented cases of children ingesting the liquid and becoming poisoned by the high-alcohol content within the product.  Some sanitizers on the market carry at 65% alcohol content.  Children are curious and can be especially curious if sanitizers smell like something they would like to taste.  Read more on children and hand-sanitizers, here.

Six Secrets to a Strong Immune System

Do you get more than two colds or bouts of the flu per year? If so, it may be a sign of a weakened immune system. Follow these six secrets to build your immune system this season.
  1. Exercise--Any exercise is better than no exercise. Think of the ways you can get moving throughout your day, the times when you can stand instead of sit and how you can find enjoyment in being active, regularly.  Did you know that walking is one of the most effective exercises?  Think of walking like an invigorating massage for every cell of your body.
  2. Multi-Vitamin--Preferably one with aloe vera juice.  Studies have shown that the absorption of necessary vitamins C and E is significantly increased when taken in conjunction with an aloe supplement.  I prefer a liquid, organic multi-vitamin that includes aloe vera juice, such as the one we carry at our office. Drop by for a free tasting sample.
  3. Chiropractic Immunity Adjustment--Subluxations are subtle misalignments in the spinal column that put pressure on the exiting spinal nerves that run the organs and systems of the body, such as the immune system. Subluxations may be caused by falls, sleeping funny, bad lifting or bad posture such as prolonged computer/desk work. Subluxations increase the stress hormone cortisol in the body. Stress may tax the body and decrease immunity. Research suggests a link between a specific chiropractic adjustment of the upper cervical spine that may boost white blood cell count up to 300% and give a powerful punch to fight infection. Schedule a time for a free consultation to see if chiropractic is right for you.
  4. Water--Is 8 glasses a day the right amount for you? It turns out that that amount is for someone who is truly dehydrated. For those who stay fairly well hydrated, aim for 4 to 5 glasses a day of filtered water.
  5. Sleep--Most people require 7 to 9 hours of sleep daily.  A good way to measure your sleep needs are to spend a weekend or even better, a week, allowing yourself to wake uninterrupted.  After you've caught up on sleep-debt, you may see a pattern in the hours your body wants to spend sleeping.
  6. Managing stress--In the office, I teach a FREE Championing Stress class*.  One tip we talk about in the class is pacing.  It may seem obvious, but the task of pacing is often overlooked.  Pacing means that if you know you have a big project coming up such as a wedding or large work/school project, you may want to postpone other non-essential tasks for later. *The next Championing Stress class will be taught 12/12 and includes lunch on me if you RSVP to (360)823-2225 while seats are still available.  Reserve a spot for yourself and a friend.
I often get other questions on the topic of immunity. What about anti-bacterial soap, and should I wipe surfaces down with anti-bacterial wipes?  Also, do pets help or are they detrimental to immunity (and allergies for that matter)? Look for our upcoming blog posts to get answers to these important questions. Be sure you are a follower to this blog so you will know when those posts are available.

Mint: For Health & Enjoyment

By Cassie McCully

Growing mint is as easy as throwing seeds and watching them turn into wildflowers--my kind of gardening!
Did you forget to water...for a week?  No problem!  With a lot of sunlight, mint will continue to grow and grow, and if you're not careful, it may just grow outside of its pot, into the ground and up the porch.
Mint can be highly invasive.

The good news is that growing mint can be purposeful and enjoyed in various ways.

The use of herbs and essential oils are becoming more popular with health care professionals, and even Dr. Davis.  Especially since we live in a day and age where our grocery store shelves are filled with processed foods that lose their essential nutrients through their processing.  Essential oils are the concentrated and complex heart of the plant.  The heart of mint, is in fact its leaves.

MINT FOR HEALTH:
  • Digestive Process: The menthol in peppermint aids the digestive process by creating bile, an essential digestive fluid, to soothe the digestive lining.
  • Nasal, Sinus and Chest Congestion: Menthol vapors are widely used for relieving nasal, sinus and chest congestion.  Just as Vick's Vapor Rub is marketed to give soothing effects, a cup of mint tea can do the same.
  • Cough: Drinking cold peppermint tea has been known to help with coughs.
  • Colic: Peppermint tea has been used to soothe colic.  Talk with your pediatrician about soothing colic with peppermint.
  • Nausea, Gas and Tension Headaches:  Mint can ease nausea and excess gas when taken orally, and soothe tension headaches by rubbing peppermint oil on the temples.
  • Anti-inflammatory, Pain-Reducer, Counterirritant: Mint, in its essential oil form helps create white cells
  • Mental Fatigue: Mint has been used to re-energize the mind, and lift the mood.
  • Mint contains Vitamin C and Vitamin A.
Using mint for the above mentioned remedies call for mint in either the concentrated essential oil form or in its natural-grown form.  You can find the essential oil of mint at your local health section in your grocery store or at your health food store.  Ask your health foods expert how to incorporate mint as a remedy for your health.

MINT IN THE KITCHEN:
I could keep linking, but you get the picture.

Mint can also be dried and stored for later usage.

Perhaps now you are looking at those mint plants a little differently?
I know I am.

Rid the Pain With Bromelain

Dealing with aches and pains is inconvenient, and no less uncomfortable. Maybe you threw your back out doing yard work yesterday, or aggravated your knee during your last run? Maybe you landed on your ankle during that wild game of backyard volleyball?  Bromelain is a supplement that may help ease the pain.

Bromelain, an enzyme extracted from the stem and fruit of pineapple, has been used for hundreds of years to reduce swelling and inflammation within the body.

I often turn a patient on to Bromelain when they are dealing with a minor injury such as a sprain or strain.  When Bromelain enters the blood stream, it works in the same way other anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen to reduce swelling and inflammation.

Bromelain has also been known to help:

  • Swelling in the nose or sinuses as a result from surgery or hay fever

  • Joint pain caused by arthritis

  • Loss of motor function caused by symptoms related to carpel tunnel

To benefit from Bromelain, it is best taken in concentrated capsule form, since much of the enzyme is found in the stem of the pineapple.  You can find the supplement at your natural food store, such as Whole Foods, in various brands and milligrams.  Talk to your natural health expert about dosage and how to incorporate Bromelain into your diet.  (Do not take, of course, if you are allergic to pineapple.)

  • Of course, the best part, is that this remedy is natural.  I'm all for natural.  You, too?

    Best in health, naturally,
    Dr. Marc
